"If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay;
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let’s so persever,
That when we live no more, we may live ever."
~ Anne Bradstreet,To My Dear and Loving Husband
My mother often cites this as the perfect poem to describe her love for my father (and vice versa, naturally). After 48 years of marriage with 9 children and 12 grandchildren, they have been richly blessed in many ways.
It is from these two loving parents that I learned how to love and affirm other people. I learned generosity, kindness, and graciousness. They met challenges they faced with hard work, integrity, and perseverance. In them, I have strong advocates who taught me to appreciate and nurture my marriage, develop my talents and skills, enjoy and appreciate my children, and have fun in life.
And so, in my second post on gratitude for October, I would like to recognize that their immense love and support for each other has profoundly shaped my understanding of the world, love, and marriage.
Dedicated, honorable, and dignified, they have a beautiful, happy marriage and are well-loved and admired parents and grandparents.
Thank you for everything, Mom and Dad. <3
